Magnificent Spring

Spring on the front range of Colorado is always a favorite. The birds are back, the blossoming trees never looked better, squirrels are digging the garden, and even old tulip bulbs are showing color.

We did the engagement session in downtown Denver and the wedding was near Winter Park Colorado. Chelsey wanted a slightly desaturated Polaroid look to some of her pages.
Colorado mountain weddings are so much fun to photograph. The rain let up long enough that afternoon to do a few shots in the field near their private residence. The only difficulty came from the orange and red lights in the tent.

Mysterious New Face Carved into Mount Rushmore

Visitors to Mount Rushmore were shocked Sunday morning to see an unfamiliar face. Previously carved into the Black Hills of South Dakota are the iconic faces of four former presidents of the United States: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The likenesses of the presidents took years to engineer, but miraculously a new face has been carved into the giant granite cliff overnight.

Visiting hikers from Iceland, Aage Elgstrim and his group, were the first to take note of the strange addition. "We've been walking across the whole of U.S. since October to go out and see all the parks. We like to start off the day quite early so we walk about 10 miles before we came here as just then the sun came up. Really we didn't know it was a new sculpture so until I looked at the picture. It seems to be the face of a young boy."

National Parks superintendent Gutzon Borglum, issued a formal statement at 10:35 calling the new face a tragedy and an embarrassment. "We have no explanation for the sudden appearance of the mysterious face, but we will use every means at our disposal to seek out and punish the culprits."

Meanwhile, in nearby Keystone, South Dakota, angry protesters assembled to demand the immediate removal of the face. With banners waving, thousands of the protesters piled into trucks, rode motorcycles or trudged on foot toward the National Park. At the main demonstration site Sunday, loud music and local delicacies competed with fiery rhetoric for the attention of the crowd.

The mystery of how such a large sculpture could be carved overnight is baffling. No one can explain it, says local shop owner Crystal Sunshine: "But my own theory which like I believe to be true is that when we pushed our clocks forward one hour, we messed with cosmic time and like really more like a year passed. Just look at the size of that tree, it wasn't that big yesterday."

A Life in the Day

Instead of just making a "family portrait," I like to spend a day with a family as an invisible (almost) photojournalist. I love photographing families playing games, eating, running... whatever happens in a normal day.

Inner City Lacrosse Thriving in Denver!

I was proud to lend a hand at a recent event for Denver City Lax. Below are a few of the shots from a fantastic showing of the film at the D.U cable center.

Denver City Lax is a Colorado non-profit organization that provides a sports-based youth development program to under-served inner city neighborhoods in the Denver metro area.

The educational opportunities associated with lacrosse, from elementary school through college, are numerous. City Lax believes providing opportunity and building character in our youth is essential to raising the community leaders of today and tomorrow.

Lacrosse is a sport that offers both on the field and classroom lessons. The game provides a framework to teach and learn character, and to gain knowledge about basic human values including honesty, courage, equality and respect.

Dressed in Black Rocks Kat & Dom

When I returned from a weekend wedding shoot in Steamboat Springs, I just had to process the images from the rocking reception. The band, Peter Yellen's Dressed in Black, was amazing. Throughout the dinner, I overheard many of the 200 guests comment how wonderful the 8 piece band played........ They had know idea how great it was about to get. The versatility of Dressed in Black is impressive beyond compare. To look at the pictures you would rightly suppose that Dressed in Black is a solid savvy jazz band. But they are so much more. When Peter does David Bowie, he sounds like David bowie.... and Michael Jackson.... and Sting.... and Dave Mathews..... and and and. Don't be fooled by Natalie's sweet voice and elegant charisma. Her depth will leave you breathless. Peter Yellen's group is far more than an event band. The unique style and sound of Dressed in Black motivates a crowd to move like no other.

Kat and Dom's wedding was the dream brides imagine. After the ceremony at the Holy Name catholic church in Steamboat Springs, the couple arrived to their reception at a private residence on Catamount lake by boat.

Wedding Dance Photography

At the Denver Botanic Gardens, this dancer was very impressive.
The Belmar center in Lakewood Colorado is a great venue to capture great wedding dance photos. The band was Peter Yellen's band Dressed in Black. I always recommend them.

Beautiful mood, first wedding dance. This comes from the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park.

Even after a long day of wedding photography, I love to capture fun wedding dance pictures. To do great dance photography means you have to go that extra kilometer (or mile) even though your body is fatigued. What makes a truly compelling wedding Dance photograph isn't just lighting and composition. The photographer must anticipate the action and look for expression. Some of my favorite venues for making wedding dance photographs are The Grand Hyatt in Denver, Cherry Hills Country Club and The Denver Country Club. The Grant Humphrey's Mansion has a low ceiling which actually makes for interesting and easy lighting whilst the elegant Sanctuary Golf Course is a challenging but very rewarding dance venue. Tent lighting like at The Hudson Gardens always provides a nice bounce of even light but once you get outside the tent, the black night will suck up your light quickly. So having an assistant to carry a second and even a third light is a big advantage.

When a horseshoe faces up, good luck pours in. This picture of the groom tossing the shoe come from the wedding of Ginger and Travis. The wedding at the Lazy J Ranch in Ail Colorado also featured skeet shooting just after the knot was tied.

Preschool and Lingerie

Being a photographer is always exciting and glamorous. Ok that was a lie and it's not true. But it's almost always fun. Photographers get excited about the images as they are created. What drives us to continue peering through our lenses is the thought that we might capture something fresh - as if no human eyes had ever seen it that way. We possess a child-like belief in the magic of the photograph. Like a great hunter, we capture our visions, and back to our darkrooms and light tables, we perfect and immortalize that nanosecond of time.

This spring, I volunteered to do group pictures at my son's pre-school; Paddington Station in Denver, Colorado (great school). Then, the next week, I did pictures for a new lingerie book for Pampered Passions Boutique of Engelwood Colorado. Talk about diverse subjects,,,,,,,,,

Preschoolers are pretty wild. Hey, I've done plenty of child portraits, family pictures,and action shots of kids, but I'd never attempted group shots of such small people. They are energetic with the attention duration of an MTV video. One kind teacher gave me a bell to ring (thanks Leslie). It helped a lot. But no sooner than their eyes were corralled, some mischievous pre-kindergardener would tickle, pass gas, giggle or squeak. My lens was seeing the tops or the backs of heads. One boy in particular was having nothing to do with me or the picture project. When I climbed down from my ladder I realized the distraction. A ladybug had landed on his arm and now all the other kids were equally engrossed the that boy's arm. We did most the shots in two days. One was a typical spring day with ladybugs and the smell of blossoms. The second day was a typical Colorado spring day - six inches of snow. The pictures aren't bad. My secret was to shoot lots and then make a composite of the best faces (ty CS3). The first and the 14th viewer who can find my son in one of the pictures will receive a free photography session.

The next week I was the photographer for a fun lingerie shoot at the Jing restaurant in Greenwood Village Colorado. Definitely a different kind of wild. The shoot at the Jing was coordinated by betsy Martin of Decibel Communications. We had to start at 5:00a.m. since the Jing is open for lunch. Though groggy that morning we all mustered our creative expertise for a solid new look. The team was Betsy, Bre Otola and Sally Walker of Beauty Box Minerals, Kennith Ivan of Scarlet Salon and of course the beautiful model Adiamond. Lawrence Yee, the proprietor of the Jing was most gracious. The menu and preparation at the Jing is exquisite. We took over the dining area for the morning shoot and did raise a few eyebrows that afternoon as we worked in the bar and even the restrooms.

Since we woke up this Easter morning with a dusting of snow, I thought it appropriate to seek some spring color. These pansies were planted just last week. More often than not, it seems, Easter comes with snow in Denver.
